Artists in residence at the International Community Arts Festival in Rotterdam, the Netherlands


March 29-April 2

Forklift artists will be traveling the Rotterdam, the Netherlands, for the International Community Arts Festival. We'll be working with the local trash collectors on a short performance, screening Trash Dance, and leading a workshop on "Community Dance US Style."

Artistic Director Allison Orr will speak alongside artists Jonah Bokaer, Eddie Cota, Hadi Eldebek, Jawole Will Jo Zollar in a plenary session moderated by Will Power. 

The development, production, presentation and promotion of work is a collaborative effort – more so now than ever – in the presenting field today. What are key factors that are shifting the making, producing and presenting of work to more effectively connect with contemporary audiences while meeting the financial and other objectives of all who have invested in the process?

Austin arts leaders talk with city employees and local artists who have worked on some of Austin’s most recognized creative placemaking projects. Learn how these cross-sector partnerships built morale, changed citizen’s perceptions, and created new audiences. See short clips, hear about the nuts and bolts of how these projects happened, and listen to conversations between organizers, artists, and city staff on how to support successful collaborations and create effective engagement strategies in your community.

Forklift Danceworks choreographers lead a discussion on community-based social practice with a panel of city employees who have performed in the company’s large-scale civic spectacles. Topics will include collaboration, the creative process and the impact these projects have had on them personally and on their work environments. Artists and city workers will offer insights and advice on about art making that addresses issues of race, class, culture and "artistic privilege" (who gets to make art and where). Panelists include a former sanitation worker, a City of Austin forestry tech and utility employee. Facilitated by Forklift choreographers Allison Orr and Krissie Marty.
