Forklift Danceworks’ Texas Tour of The King and I Austin-based Forklift Danceworks is touring Texas with its award-winning show, The King & I, a dance theater piece loosely structured on Elvis’s last concert. With The King & I, Forklift Danceworks seeks to celebrate the spirit of small-town Texas, highlighting the role these communities played in Elvis’s rapid rise to fame. 2007 marks the 30th anniversary of Elvis’s death, and The King & I provides a unique, thought-provoking, and timely perspective on the Elvis legend. Echoing the fast and furious journey that Elvis and his bandmates made throughout Texas in the mid 50s, Forklift Danceworks will pay tribute to both Elvis and these communities by performing The King & I in historic municipal auditoriums where Elvis and his band actually played. Forklift Danceworks will also feature local community members making cameo Elvis appearances during the show. The King & I is an hour-long performance that played to standing-room-only audiences during its 2005 Austin premiere. Praised by critics and audience members alike, the show was listed as one of Austin’s Top Ten Theater and Dance Events of 2005 by The Austin Chronicle. The King & I is rich with fast-paced dancing, offbeat humor, and (of course!) singing Elvis Impersonators.
